Microsoft is Stupid, Apple is Not
Geek types like us will probably want to just blow away Windows and replace it with Linux, while less tech-savvy folks will opt for Macs. There are geeks though who will buy a Mac and keep their Linux boxes too. One can have both and appreciate the virtues of Linux and Mac OS X.
Regardless, the bottom line is that we appear to have reached a tipping point away from Windows and over to other operating systems.
Smart computer users are abandoning Microsoft in droves and embracing Mac OS X and/or Linux.
Dumping Windows
Getting back to Lance’s column, perhaps the most accurate way of putting it is not that Mac/Linux users are smarter than Windows users per se when it comes to security. Perhaps it’s just that they had enough of Microsoft’s stupidity and decided to vote with their feet.
And perhaps it’s also more a case of current Windows users finally beginning to follow in the footsteps of these current Mac and Linux users. In that case, I suppose one could argue that a lot of Windows users are starting to smarten up by looking for alternatives to remaining slaves to Microsoft’s insecure operating systems.

But that won’t change or lessen the stupidity of Microsoft itself, unfortunately. Perhaps it might when Mac OS X and Linux together have 50% or more of the desktop OS market. Until then, Microsoft will sail on…oblivious to how bad their operating systems suck in terms of security and design, and how many of their current customers truly detest them.
What’s your take on this? Are Mac/Linux users smarter than Windows users? Tell me in the comments.
