Good Riddance to Bill Gates!
They say it’s not nice to kick a guy when he’s down but how about kicking him when he’s retiring? Seems to me that that’s fair game. In case you haven’t noticed there’s been a lot of media coverage about Bill Gates retiring from Microsoft and quite a lot of it has been more than a little fawning. Well it’s time to set aside the fanboy accolades and cut to the truth about Bill Gates.
Bill Gates’ reign at the top of tech plunged the computing world into a new dark age that only the Internet, Apple, Google, and Linux have begun to liberate us from.
Gates’ operating system products were second-rate copies of more elegant, stable, and technologically superior products such as Mac OS, Linux, and Unix. Gates’ retirement will be remembered as the beginning of the end for Microsoft.
And it’s not coming a moment too soon. So much damage has been done by Gates and Microsoft that it will take the computing world years to finally escape their grasp.

Fawning Media Coverage
One thing that has really made me sick to my stomach has been the volume and quality of the media coverage of Gates’ departure. There have been way—way too many articles about him and the fawning, drooling quality of some of them are downright sickening.
It seems that some writers have been bamboozled by Gates’ “charitable” foundation and have decided to give him a free pass for his past sins.
Well that’s certainly not going to happen in this column. Gates’ predatory behavior, sheer ruthlessness and willingness to leverage his office and desktop OS monopolies to destroy his competitors has to be noted in any assessment of his career. He made the choice to behave that way for his own financial gain and for the accumulation of power and market share for his company.
And no amount of drool produced by the brain-dead media is going to change that.
Windows: The Ultimate Virus
If there is one thing that Bill Gates will be remembered for, it’s Windows. And what a god-awful legacy it is for anybody to have. Windows will forever be the millstone around Gates’ neck when people look back at his years in the industry.
How bad is Windows? How bad has it been? Let’s look at what sucks about it and let’s be careful to remember that we have Bill Gates to thank for all of it. And even Gates himself has had endless problems with Windows as documented in this email. If the guy who is running Microsoft can’t get Windows to operate properly what hope does the average user have?

What Windows has given to computer users over the years:
Poor Security—Windows is and has always been a magnet for viruses, spyware, malware, and other nasties. And Vista, while desperately trying to fix the situation, is still more vulnerable than Linux or Mac OS X.
DLL Hell—Another fantastic experience foisted on computer users by Gates and his merry band of Windows coders. Who can forget the excitement of Windows’ dynamic link libraries? I know I missed seeing things like “A Required DLL File was not found” when using my Mac or Linux boxes.
Craptastic Interfaces—Who can forget the stunning beauty of the various Windows interfaces? As intuitive as they are beautiful, they always gave Windows users much to be grateful for…from the “elegance” of Windows 3.1 to the futuristic glory of Microsoft Bob to the Fisher-Price era of Windows XP to the “we ran out of ideas so we’ll steal from Apple again” grandeur of Vista.
Gates always made sure that Windows was on the cutting edge of interface design…not.
Instability and the Blue Screen of Death—As if superior interface design was not enough, computers users can thank Bill Gates for giving us truly stable operating systems over his years at Microsoft. Who won’t miss “the blue screen of death” or the fond memories of constantly rebooting Windows 3.1, 95, XP, 2000, or even the mighty Windows Vista?
Lost Time and Productivity—When you add up all of the stuff listed above, you can’t help but wonder why Gates hasn’t been arrested by the government and brought up on charges of crimes against productivity given how much time, effort, energy, and productivity his crappy operating systems have cost the entire world. How many people have wasted endless hours of their lives trying to cope with the virus known as Windows?
Remember everybody, Bill Gates is who you all have to thank for Windows and all the misery and unhappiness it has brought to your lives.
Yaaaaaaay, Bill!
