PCLinuxOS 2009.1 Review

It’s been quite a while since the last update to PCLinuxOS back in 2007. While Ubuntu and other distros come out every 6 months, PCLinuxOS is considered a “rolling release distribution” that gets updated regularly as new stuff appears in the PCLinuxOS repository.

So was it worth the wait? I’m happy to say…yes it was! This release features Linux kernel 2.6.26.8, KDE 3.5.10, OpenOffice 3.0, Firefox 3.07, Compiz-Fusion 3D, and a number of other new goodies.

Installation
I installed PCLinuxOS in VirtualBox and in VMWare for this review and had no problems installing it in either. When you first boot off the ISO file you are taken to a “live” desktop where you can begin using PCLinuxOS while you opt to install it to your computer’s hard disk.

The installation itself is simple and easy. There was a time when that was remarkable for Linux but these days it’s old hat. Suffice to say if you’ve installed Ubuntu or any of the other distributions (or Windows for that matter) then you’ll have no problem with PCLinuxOS.
