VirtualBSD Review

If you read Superman comics as a kid or an adult then you’re probably already familiar with Kandor, the Kryptonian capital city that was miniaturized by the evil Braniac and trapped in a bottle. Well how ironic then that I managed to stumble across an operating system in a very similar situation.

The only difference is that, unlike Kandor, VirtualBSD is trapped in VMware not in a bottle. You can’t install it directly to your computer as an independent OS at this point. Nor can you run it as a Live CD to get a taste of it without installing anything. VirtualBSD exists solely as a VMware appliance right now.

So why am I writing about it? Well let’s face it, folks here at ET (readers as well as staffers) love to tinker with computers and computer operating systems, especially when they’re a bit odd or off-base from the usual stuff that’s out there.

So, after getting an email from one of the developers, I took it upon myself to download VirtualBSD and run it. Note that you can run VirtualBSD with the free VMware Player software if you are using Windows or Linux as your host operating system. If you’re on a Mac then you’ll have to cough up some money to buy VMware Fusion.
