Secret Confessions of A World of Warcraft Addict!

My colleague, Lance Ulanoff, over at PCMag, posted an interesting link on Twitter a while back (you can find me on Twitter here) to an article dealing with MMORPG addiction.

It was sad and somewhat moving to read about one guy’s struggle with it. He lost his girlfriend, his job, and pretty much his life to Everquest.

World of Warcraft and Me
As some of you may know, I’ve been playing World of Warcraft for years. I’ve written about it fairly frequently for ET and for my own blogs here and there. Because the game is always changing, there is always something new to talk about.

I remember the heady days when I first started playing it. I was amazed at how large the game world was. I’d never played anything quite like it before, and I quickly became immersed in it when I rolled a human mage named Findelglorin.

I didn’t really know what I was doing, as I barely knew the difference between races and classes when I started playing. But I learned a lot, and had a blast taking Findel all the way to level 60.

I met some folks while playing and we started playing together and hanging out more and more in the game. One guy I played with was from Canada (hi, Tyler!), and he even came for a visit once when he was in the U.S. We hung out in real life, went shooting at my gun range, and generally had a pretty good time together.

So I had some great times in World of Warcraft. But there was also a dark side to the game for me, and it might surprise some of you to find out about it.
